The Paper Dome

by Timothy Laird

How did a church made out of paper in Japan end up in the middle of Taiwan?

Paper is useful for many things, but can you imagine building a church with it? _(1)_ example can be found in Nantou County's Puli township. The Paper Dome, a church made out of paper, has been the center of attention _(2)_ since its arrival from Japan. Its main structure is _(3)_ 58 cardboard columns, with each measuring 325 millimeters wide and five meters high. At first, the Paper Dome was built as a replacement for a church that was destroyed in a fire in Kobe's 1995 earthquake. It served as a _(4)_ house of worship and community center for residents in Nagata, Japan. Its construction was intended to unite the _(5)_ of the earthquake and bring them hope in the darkest hours of their lives.
So how did this Paper Dome end up in Nantou? In 2005, the Paper Dome was scheduled to be torn down to _(6)_ a new concrete church. The New Homeland Foundation, a Puli-based non-profit organization, heard the news and thought it would be a shame to let the unique building that was a symbol of hope and rejuvenation be reduced to rubble. They _(7)_ that the church be relocated to Puli, the epicenter of the 921 earthquake in 1999. Now, the Paper Dome helps people in Taiwan find the strength to rebuild their lives, just as it did for the Japanese.
1. (A) For (B) What if (C) Such (D) One such
2. (A) far (B) ever (C) only (D) after
3. (A) comprised of(B) composed with(C) consisted of (D) concerned with
4. (A) tolerant (B) potential (C) temporary (D) superficial
5. (A) volunteers (B) survivors (C) competitors (D) participants
6. (A) take over (B) lay off (C) give rise to (D) make room for
7. (A) described (B) threatened (C) proposed (D) expected
1. One such example can be found in Nantou County's Puli township.
理由:
a. (A) For example, S + V
I like tropical fruits. For example, pineapples are my favorite.
(B) What if + S + V...?
What if the teacher finds out we cheated on the exam?
It's such a terrible shame that Sam died so young.
It is such a good music that I bought the CD. (╳)
→ It is such good music that I bought the CD. (○)
(D) one(一個)是數量詞,視作不定冠詞 a/an,之後即可接單數名詞(如 one girl),與 such 並用時,such 之後不可再接不定冠詞 a/an,否則將造成冠詞的重複。
例: Debby is attracted to humorous people, and Kent is one such man.
2. ..., has been the center of attention ever since its arrival from Japan.
Your room is far more spacious than mine.
b. ever 是副詞,常與 since(自從)並用,以修飾 since。
Ever since I met Julie, she has been very nice.
c. only 之後多接介詞片語或 when/after 引導的副詞子句,故 (C) 不可選。
例: Only by working hard can you accomplish your goal.
Only when I am late for work do I take a taxi.
3. Its main structure is comprised of 58 cardboard columns, with each measuring...
理由:
a. (A) be comprised of... 由……組成
= be composed of...
= consist of...
例: The book is comprised of stories written by children.
(D) be concerned with... 關心……
例: Adam is only concerned with how to improve his business.
4. It served as a temporary house of worship and community center for residents in Nagata, Japan.
理由:
a. (A) tolerant a.
be tolerant of...
例: My mother is not tolerant of my brother's laziness.
(B) potential a.
a potential customer 潛在客戶
(C) temporary a.
permanent a. 永久的
例: The apartment is just a temporary residence for us.
(D) superficial a.
例: Amanda is so superficial that she only wants rich friends.
5. Its construction was intended to unite the survivors of the earthquake and...
理由:
a. (A) volunteer n. 自願者
(B) survivor n.
(C) competitor n.
(D) participant n. 參與者
6. In 2005, the Paper Dome was scheduled to be torn down to make room for a new concrete church.
理由:
a. (A) take over... 接手……
例: I will take over the project if you think you can't handle it.
(B) lay off...

(C) give rise to...
John's speech gave rise to a lot of yelling from the audience.
(D) make room for...
We are trying to make room for this big table.
7. They proposed that the church be relocated to Puli, the epicenter of the 921 earthquake in 1999.
理由:
a. (A) describe vt. 描述
(B) threaten vt. 威脅
(C) propose vt.
The legislator proposed that taxes on cigarettes be increased.
(D) expect vt.
Little did we expect that our team would win the championship.

Informal Language‏

Ever go jogging in a business suit? What about going to a job interview in pajamas? Dressing appropriately is a lot like using a foreign language in the right way. It all depends on the situation. People in America use formal English for making speeches and writing business letters. But they prefer informal language when they talk to friends.
Americans are fairly laid-back, both in styles of dress and in language. So to understand their culture, it pays to know something about informal language—in other words, English in blue jeans and a Tshirt.
English, like every language, is always changing. New slang

terms are created all the time. Often they’re here today, gone tomorrow. For instance, if you wanted to call something exciting in the 1960s, you would say it was groovy or far out. Today you might
describe it as cool or even bad.
「g r o o v y」美好的,或是「far out」走在時代尖端的。
Each sub-group of American society—from teenagers to soldiers to thieves to ethnic groups— has its own slang. People who aren’t a part of the “in-group” can’t understand the meaning, even though the words are “English.” So it’s not easy for outsiders to use slang correctly.
Like many languages, American English has numerous idioms that paint word pictures. These colorful expressions come from everyday life and add spice to language. When Americans want to make a good first impression on someone, they try to put their best foot forward. That way, they won’t get off on the wrong foot in their relationship. Learning about idioms in a language and culture can be difficult, but don’t get cold feet. Just be careful when using these expressions. Otherwise, you might put your foot in your mouth.
Americans enjoy making things easy on themselves. Even their pronunciation is relaxed.
Sounds or syllables that are not stressed are shortened or combined with
other sounds. As a result, “What do you want to do?” becomes “Whaddaya wanna do?”
And “I don’t know” sounds like “I dunno.” See if you can understand the following
conversation:
Gene: Jeet yet?
Tim: No, ju?
Gene: Skoeet!
因此,「What do you want to do?」
就變成了「Whaddaya wanna do?」而「I don't know.」
Jeet yet?
提姆: No, ju?
Skoeet!
Now let’s translate it into regular English:
Gene: Did you eat yet?
Tim: No, did you?
Gene: Let’s go eat!
School teachers probably cringe at this kind of pronunciation. But the fact is, that’s how Americans often talk in real-life situations.
吉妮: Did you eat yet?
提姆: No, did you?
吉妮: Let's go eat!
There’s one type of informal language that you should avoid using, however. Swearwords offend many people in America. Sometimes people say “four-letter words” to express anger or pain. Many of these “ curse words” are terms from the Bible that people have misused. For example, to damn means to punish forever in Hell, so “damn” and “hell” are strong curses.
例如,「D a m n」該死!
Using the names of God or Jesus without respect can also bother people. And one more thing: Stay away from “dirty words”—vulgar descriptions of sex or the human body. True, some people talk like this, but such “gutter language” should stay in the gutter.
Americans enjoy being informal. They like making themselves comfortable, whether it’s wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt or using informal language. So if you want to speak real American-style English, just go casual— especially if your English teacher isn’t looking.

Hooray for Bollywood

by Leigh Goldberg
Bollywood movies are taking the world by storm.
Before there was Mumbai, there was Bombay, the city's former name, which was the center of the Indian film industry. Bollywood, which is a combination of Bombay and Hollywood, is not actually a physical location like its cousin in the West. Instead, it refers to the part of the industry that produces nearly all the Hindi-language based movies in the world.
Tracing its start to 1911, Bollywood films are typically three to four-hour long musical productions that include intermissions. Essential to this format are lots of action, without the bloodshed of Hollywood movies, and dozens of song-and-dance numbers, which oftentimes feature at least 100 choreographed dancers. Additionally, big-name stars blaze across the screen as they sing and act out melodramatic stories that contain no kissing or sexual contact and always end happily. Movie plots usually center around star-crossed lovers, siblings separated at birth, corrupt politicians, love triangles, and more. Such creations have everything the audiences want and are called masala movies, just like the spice mixture commonly used in Indian cuisine. Bollywood movies are jam-packed with all forms of entertainment because Indian audiences expect to get full value for their hard earned money. With more than 800 Bollywood movies produced each year, which is twice the number made in the US, it comes as no surprise that over 14 million Indians go to the movies daily.
Aside from being popular in their home country, Bollywood films have been well received in practically every part of the world, including Egypt, Russia, Taiwan, and even Hollywood. Bollywood has wormed its way into Western society so much so that Western actors are now seeking out roles in their productions. Pretty soon, we will all be singing and dancing to Bollywood movies instead of watching the latest Hollywood thriller.

Adam: I’m never living with anyone before marriage. I think living together is for a 1)committed relationship only.
Ursula: Wow. How’ll you know if you can 2)tolerate that person, then? You have to try it before you buy it.
Adam: I beg to 3)differ. I think if you live together 4)beforehand, you’ll just take each other for granted.
Ursula: You sound like my mom. She says, “Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?”
Adam: Yep, that’s the way lots of men think. My aunt moved in with her boyfriend, and then he broke off their 1)engagement.
Ursula: I definitely want to make sure I can stand living with my boyfriend before we get married.
Adam: Well, to each his own.
Gabriel: You spend too much time on that computer!
Phil: Dad, everyone does. We play games together online.
Gabriel: You should be doing chores or getting a part-time job. When I was your age, I was 1)shoveling snow, rakingleaves and 2)mowing the lawn.
Phil: Times have changed, Dad.
Gabriel: You just don’t understand the value of hard work. If you spend all your time in front of a computer, you won’t learn anything.
Phil: I’m learning hand-eye 3)coordination. I can get a job at a video game company.
Gabriel: You kids these days, I 4)swear you’ve got your heads in the clouds….
Ricky: You want to paint our bedroom purple? Honey, are you serious?
Julie: But it’s not purple. It’s 1)lilac. There’s a huge difference.
Ricky: I don’t think so. It’s purple mixed with white, so it’s still purple. What’s wrong with white?
Julie: No one paints their house just plain white anymore.
Ricky: Sorry, I’m putting my foot down. No purple, no lilac, no 2)lavender!
Julie: But it’ll help you get in touch with your 3)feminine side!
Lucy: How could you have let that client 1)get away?

Lucy: Says who? We already agreed that you were going to handle them and I was going to 2)go after new business.
Bob: That was your 2)interpretation of our agreement. That wasn’t my 3)understanding.

Lucy: How can you say that? You specifically told me to go after new business.
Bob: I had two other accounts the boss told me to take over.

Tony: Dad, you’re not fine. You’re in denial.
Clark: Son, I understand your concern. But I don’t need a doctor. Besides, doctors only make things worse. People get sick going to the hospital with all those diseases.
Tony: That’s just an excuse! How can you be so stubborn?
Clark: I’m not going and that’s final
