「查字典」怎麼說？4句念起來很順的英文，不一定是對的！

念起來很順的句子不一定是對的。那是因為我們太依賴直覺脫口而出。說到查字典，就用check the dictionary，問專案進度，就直譯What’s the progress？聽不懂CNN，說 I can’t hear CNN。想當然爾這些英文，其實不是這麼說的。請拿一本筆記本，只要遇到不是這麼說的，就寫下來，反覆閱讀自己的筆記，不斷地發現還有哪一些「原來不是這樣說」的英文，想辦法讓自己下一次說對。一起來看幾個經典錯誤例子：
要是你對這個問題不清楚， 請查字典。
 （中式）If don’t know the problem, check／look up a dictionary, please.
（正確）If you have no idea about it, consult a dictionary, please.
（正確）If you have no idea about it, look it up in a dictionary, please.
很多人看到查詢，就想到check，查字典就是check the dictionary。後來學了查字典要用look up，就以為查字典是look up the dictionary。 這些都不正確。「查字典」英文裡可以這麼說：
Consult the dictionary
 Consult是顧問、詢問、請教的意思，直接加dictionary。
look up the word in the dictionary
查字典其實是在字典裡查某個特定的字，不是真去檢查字典，所以用look up OOO in the dictionary
你的專案目前進度如何？
 （中式）What is the progress of your project？
（正確）How is the project coming along？
一想到進度，腦子自然就出現progress。就講出了這個怪怪的句子。這句話的主詞專案project，「進行」在英文裡有一個片語，come along。你問「How is the project coming along？」
對方可能會回答：
The project is going well. （專案很順利）
謝謝你的幫忙。
 （中式）Thank your help.
（正確）Thank you for your help.
thank意思是「謝謝」，謝謝的對象基本上是人，不是事，如果要說為了某事而感激某人，就再加一個for。
 例如：She said goodbye and thanked us for coming.
她怎麼還沒來？
 （中式）Why hasn’t she come？
（正確） What’s keeping her？
這句話很容易受中文的直覺影響，講成了「Why hasn’t she come？」這話文法上沒有錯，但聽起來有責備之意，如果只是關心別人為什麼還沒到，語氣緩和些，就用What’s keeping her？
keep 有耽擱之意，意思是：什麼事耽擱他了？
