Phil: Good night, Ron. I’m heading
home. Don’t tell me you’re
working late again?
Ron: Yeah, I’m afraid so. I’ve got to
finish going over the colors for
the Stardust Hotel brochure.
Phil: Can’t someone else do that?
Our new designer Lisa said she
needed another project.
Ron: I know, but Lisa’s too new. I
don’t trust her to do this right.
Besides, it would take too long to
explain what the hotel wants.
And they want to see the
brochure design tomorrow.
Phil: You know, Ron, every time I ask
you to let someone else help
you, you always have an excuse.
Do you really like doing
everything yourself?
Ron: I don’t do everything myself.
Just the most important things.
Phil: But to you, everything is
important and has to be right.
You look over the text. You look
over the photos and the colors.
You take the brochures to the
clients.
Ron: But that’s my job.
Phil: I know. But we’ve got too many
clients now. We can’t do every
step of every job by ourselves.
Ron: All right. I’ll give something to
Lisa.
Ron: Good morning, Lisa. Ready for a
new job?
Lisa: Sure. What do you have in
mind?
Ron: I need you to design an attractive
brochure for Gino’s Italian
Restaurant.
Lisa: That should be fun. I love Italian
food!
Ron: Good. Gino wants the brochure
to reflect the decor of his
restaurant.
Lisa: What’s it like?
Ron: Oh, you know, the typical Italian
restaurant with red-and-white
checked tablecloths.
Lisa: Uh, OK. Anything else?
Ron: No, just see what you can come
up with. Here are some
photographs of the restaurant
you can use.
Ron: Phil, look at this brochure for
Gino’s Italian Restaurant. I took
your advice and let Lisa design it.
Phil: Good. How did she do?
Ron: Terrible. The photographs are
too small. The colors are too
bright. I don’t like the style of
lettering she chose for the title.
And neither will our client. This
is why I like to do things myself.
I never get the job done right
when I delegate.
Phil: Well, what guidelines did you
give her?
Ron: I told her to design an attractive
brochure.
Phil: Is that all? That's pretty vague.
Did she go with you to talk to
Gino?
Ron: No, but I told her what he
wanted. I thought I made myself
clear.
Phil: Did you tell her what colors you
wanted or didn’t want? Did you
talk about the size of the photos
you wanted? Did you give her
any specifications at all?
Ron: No, I thought I’d just see what
she could do.
Phil: And now you don’t like it.
Ron: Right.
Phil: So go back to her and ask her to
change some things. Explain to
her what you don't like and why.
Ron: Did you see the brochure for
Gino’s? I think it turned out
pretty good.
Phil: Yes, I did see it. It’s very eyecatching.
Lisa did a good job.
Ron: She did. After I went over the
brochure with her, she asked to
visit the restaurant. She met
Gino and looked around the
restaurant to get a feel for i t .
Then she came back and redid
the brochure. I think she’s going
to work out just fine.
Phil: And you won’t be working such
long hours.
Ron: Yeah. Why didn’t you teach me
how to delegate sooner?
