Deadlines

Taylor’s Travel Adventures is a small, monthly travel magazine owned and edited by Kenny
Taylor. One Monday morning, Sherry, the managing editor, knocked on Kenny’s office door.
Mr. Taylor: Come in!
Sherry: Good morning, Mr. Taylor Do you have a minute? I think we may have a
problem with our August magazine.
Mr. Taylor: What's wrong?
Sherry: All of the articles are in and are being edited—except the Hong Kong story. A
freelance writer, Karen Stuart, was supposed to finish it almost two weeks ago.
I've left messages on her answering machine, but she hasn't returned my calls.

Mr. Taylor: That's not good. I'd hoped to use Hong Kong as our cover story. We've got
some great photographs for it.
Sherry: I know. I've already chosen one for the cover. But that won't do us any good if we have no story.
Mr. Taylor: Does this Karen Stuart usually meet her deadlines?
Sherry: Yes, we’ve used her before, and she’s been very good.
That's why I can't understand what the problem is this time.
Mr. Taylor: Well, keep trying to call her.
We’re down to the wire. If we don't have that article by tomorrow, we're in trouble.

Sherry: Taylor’s Travel Adventures,
this is Sherry speaking.
Karen: Hello, Sherry. This is
Karen.
Sherry: Karen! I’ve been trying to
call you for over a week!
Karen: I know. Sorry for not
returning your calls earlier,
but I’ve been really sick. It’s
going to be another week
before I can finish the Hong
Kong story.
Sherry: I wish you’d told me earlier,
Karen. We’re in a real bind
now. We were counting on
that story. (sigh) Well, I’ll
see what we can work out.
 Mr. Taylor: Hello?
Sherry: This is Sherry. Karen just
called. She’s very sick and
can’t finish Hong Kong until
next week. What are we
going to do?
Mr. Taylor: What are our alternatives?
Sherry: I’ve got a couple of other
freelance writers working on
stories. And Wanda on our
staff is writing one on
architecture in Italy. I can
see if one of them can hurry
up and finish.
Mr. Taylor: Any good photos for the
Italy story?
Sherry: Yes, some great ones. I’d
thought of using one for the
cover in October.
Mr. Taylor: See if there’s any way
Wanda can finish that story
by tomorrow. Then let’s
plan on switching the Hong
Kong and Italy stories.
Sherry: I’ll see what I can do.
Sherry: Wanda, can I talk to you for
a second?
Wanda: Sure. What’s up?
Sherry: We’re in a bind. One of our
freelancers didn't come through. Is there any way
you can finish your Italy
story by tomorrow?
Wanda: Tomorrow! Well, I don’t
know, maybe. I’ve got a
rough draft done. If I drop
everything else I’m working
on, I think I could finish.
Sherry: What else is on your plate?
Wanda: I’m supposed to finish two
articles for September’s
issue. They’re due on
Friday. If I drop them to
work on Italy, I don’t see
how I can complete
everything on time.
Sherry: Hmm, you’re working on the
interview with the airline
pilot and the New York
shopping article, right?
Wanda: Right. I’ve almost finished
the interview article. But I
haven’t started New York.
Sherry: Concentrate on Italy. I’ll get
someone else to write New
York.
Wanda: Great. I’ll finish Italy by
tomorrow. Then I’ll still
have three days to finish the
interview.
Sherry: We’re all set. Wanda can
finish Italy by tomorrow. I
just needed to reassign
one of her other articles.
Mr. Taylor: Great. Another problem
solved.
Sherry: But who knows what will
happen tomorrow!

You look so tacky!

(你很聳) 或It's tacky. 你還可以用gaudy (俗麗的;沒有品味的), 例如: Your outfit is gaudy!
A: Red shirt, green pants, blue shoes and white socks.... You look so tacky!
B: Please, don't you know this kind of mixing and matching is totally in this year?

另有一種突尼西亞的蛋料理叫Shakshouka/Shakshuka,是將蛋放在由蕃茄. 辣椒與一些如小茴香和薑黃根粉末等香料(tomatoes, onions, chili peppers, and spices such as cumin and tumeric)混合的醬料內烹煮,在摩洛哥.

Mystery Files 2

Everyone in Taiwan is familiar with the legend of Hua Mulan. Experts know that this young Chinese woman disguised herself as a man in order to take her father's place in the emperor's1 army. Mulan fought bravely and was given a horse for her services. However, the experts don't agree on every detail of her life. Some believe her last name was Zhu, while others think it was Wei. They also disagree on where and when she lived.
These questions about Mulan's past seem pretty easy to solve when they are compared to other legends from around the world. Take Lawrence of Arabia for example. Thomas Edward Lawrence was a real British officer. He wrote a book about his own role in leading the Great Arab Revolt2 during World War I. The film "Lawrence of Arabia" was based on the book and made Lawrence's story even more popular. Even so, historians3 still question the truth of his story. One side regards him as a great military mind4, while the other thinks he is a great liar. This month, National Geographic Channel's "Mystery5 Files 2" tries to put an end to this debate.

ex:Her one aim in life is to go to university. ex:He has a degree in Literature at Cambridge. ex:He will get his master's degree by next summer. 我 managed to 拿到!

I managed to get it done.”(我是想盡辦法才做到的。)

Blake:Hey, who's your best friend? Steven:You, why? Blake:Yeah, me. Because I managed to get us free tickets to the Sticky Rice show next Friday. Steven:Sticky Rice? Really? Wow!

I'm so pissed!

Welcome

This was Nancy's third week working for the KWIN radio station. She really enjoyed her
job in the promotions department . She was just completing the arrangements
for a radio contest when her manager, Larry, stopped by her desk.
Larry: Hi, Nancy! How’s it going?
Nancy: Just fine, thanks. Hey, good
news! The Movie Palace
downtown is going to donate
some prizes we can give
away on the radio.
Larry: That's great, Nancy. You're
doing a fantastic job.
Nancy: Thank you. I'm really learning
a lot.
Larry: Well, you're going to be
learning even more. I have a
new job for you.
Nancy: A new job? I’m just getting
used to this one. And I’m not
sure if I have enough time to
take on something else.
Larry: This job won’t take up too
much of your time. And I’m
sure you’ll enjoy it since you
like people so much.
Nancy: So, what is this new job?
Larry: Giving tours of the radio
station.
Nancy: Me? Give tours? But I don’t
know very much about the
station.
Larry: Then this will be a good
opportunity for you to learn.
Also, you’ll get to meet a wide
variety of our listeners. They
might even give you some
ideas for future promotions.
Nancy: T h a t ’s true, I guess. Well,
when do I start?
Larry: Next week.
Marie: Hi, Larry. Hi, Nancy. I just finished giving my last tour for today.
Larry: Hi, Marie. (to Nancy) Marie's been giving tours for the past six months. She can teach you all you need to know. Now if you two will excuse me, I have another appointment.
(Larry leaves)
Marie: I hear you’re going to start giving tours next week.
Nancy: Yes, but I’m not too excited about it. Oh, it can’t be too hard, I guess. There’s not much to running a radio station, is there?
Marie: Oh, yes, there is!
You’d be surprised at
everything that' involved.
Marie: When I first came to KWIN, I felt the same way you do. I wanted to concentrate on writing top-selling ads and thinking up promotions. But giving tours has helped me learn what goes on around here. It has also given me a chance to meet
some of our listeners.
Nancy: That's what Larry said. I hope I can learn to give a good tour.
Marie: You’ll catch on quickly. You’ll
be joining me next week when
I give a couple of tours. After
that, you can ask about
anything you don’t understand.
By the end of the
week, you’ll be “Nancy the
Tour Guide”!
The next week, Nancy was running
the tours by herself. Her first group
included teens from the local high
school. Nancy showed them all the
different offices and operationss at
KWIN.
Nancy: Here’s the promotions
department. They’re the
ones who think up all those
contests you hear on the air.
Student 1: Neat! I really liked the
contest you did last month.
You know, the one where the
D J played part of a song,
and you called in if you knew
the name? Will you do
another contest like that?
Nancy: Who knows? Better keep
listening!
Nancy: Now here in this studio, we have one of our announcers, Susie Sweeter. She’s on the air, so try to be quiet.
Student 1: She looks really busy. It isn’t easy being a radio announcer, is it?
Nancy: Not always. But its a lot of fun. And you saw all the people that make her job
easier.
Student 2: Yeah. Before we took this tour, I thought Susie was the only important person at KWIN. I didn’t realize how many people it takes to put on a radio show.
Nancy knew all about KWIN. She liked
showing people the station and
answering their questions. Giving tours
turned into her favorite part of the job at
KWIN.

National Palace Museum

ex:We invited a firefighter to visit the factory to show the workers how to use a fire extinguisher.
ex:Hurry up! We have to catch the train to Taipei.
ex:I don't feel like going there by taxi, because the night charge kicks in right after 9:00 p.m.
ex:We visited the National Palace Museum last Friday.

Just a moment.

ex:Hello. This is the loan department. May I help you?
ex:You are speaking to Herry.
ex:Let me transfer you to the production plant.
ex:Just a moment. Let me put you through.

Every Dog Has His Day 壓力很大嗎?

Usually, when something goes to the dogs, it gets worse. However, this is not the case for Yale University Law School. Instead, a dog is making the campus more popular. Monty is a 21-pound border terrier1 mix, and he spends his days at the Yale Law Library. He is not there to keep the books or the staff safe. In fact, he is there to offer his services to the law students.
Monty's full name is General Montgomery, and he is a certified2 therapy3 dog. This means he is professionally4 trained to be handled by lots of strangers. Students at the law school can sign up to check out Monty for 30 minutes. Most just sit quietly on a couch in a back office of the library and pet Monty. Students are also allowed to give him a drink5 of water or a biscuit6. All this helps the students take pressure off their studies and relax even if it is only for a little while. It also increases happiness, calmness, and their emotional health. Everyone agrees that Monty is the best addition7 that the library has had in a long time.

@Tips In Use
...something goes to the dogs...
此外,標題的"every dog has his day"也是片語,指『每個人皆有得意之時』。
a dog's life 生活困苦
as sick as a dog
treat + 人 + like a dog 把某人當狗看待
the tail wagging the dog
Bill couldn't get out of the bed because he was as sick as a dog.
Janet was going to say something to Greg about his dirty socks on the table, but she decided to let sleeping dogs lie.
