Feedback

Mike: This is beginning to look good. We’ve got a list of goals set out in order of
priority and a schedule of completion dates. I finally know where I’m going!
Mr. Currey: Yes. But do you know how to get there?
Mike: Hmm. Not yet. I still need to set objectives—the smaller steps necessary to
achieve the goals.
Mr. Currey: Right. You can work with your team members on those.
Mike: OK.
Recently Corey feels frustrated because he hasn't gotten any feedback on his work. His former employer regularly evaluated him, so Corey knew his strong and weak points. However, Natalie hasn't commented on Corey's efforts, so he wonders if his work measures up to her expectations.
Shawna: Corey, you look upset today. Is everything OK?
Corey: Not exactly. I’m a little frustrated about my job.
Shawna: Why is that?
Corey: I’ve been working here for eight months now. I think I'm fitting in, but I
don’t get much feedback from Natalie. I haven't heard a peep about my performance since my three-month probation period ended.
Shawna: You should be glad. Our last boss criticized us all the time. Maybe Natalie thinks it’s better to not say anything than to put people down. Sometimes no news is good news.
Corey: Maybe you’re right, but I’d still like to know how I’m doing.
Corey: You’ve been working here for almost two years, Shawna. Do you think I
should talk to Natalie?
Shawna: It might be a good idea, especially since the lack of feedback bothers you so
much. Your mood might start to distract you from your work. Then you really will get some feedback! Besides, Natalie will probably welcome your questions and suggestions.
Corey: I suppose I can’t lose anything by trying. I’ll ask to see her sometime today
when she’s free.
Shawna: Be sure to let me know how it goes.
Natalie: What’s on your mind, Corey?
Corey: I’ve been thinking about my position here at Full Life. I’m
happy to be in charge of the weight room equipment, but at times I wonder if I’m
meeting your expectations. I need some feedback from you concerning my work.
Natalie: I apologize for not getting around to evaluations earlier. I’m definitely pleased with the job you're doing in the gym. I appreciate your fresh ideas for new
purchases.
Corey: I'm glad to hear you like my ideas.
Natalie: You're also handy with repairs. It’s nice to have
someone who can fix the equipment when there are
problems. And thanks for taking time with our members to make suggestions
about using the machines.
Corey: No problem. I enjoy helping people.
Shawna: You should be glad. Our last boss criticized us all the time. Maybe Natalie thinks it’s better to not say anything than to put people down. Sometimes no news is good news.
Corey: Maybe you’re right, but I’d still like to know how I’m doing.
Natalie: It's best to talk with me regarding prices. We can afford to spend extra money
on the machines that are in demand. After all, the step machines are the most
popular ones in the gym. Get me a copy of those prices by tomorrow. Then we’ll decide which model to purchase.
Corey: I’ll get on that right away.
Corey: Hey, Shawna, thanks for
encouraging me to talk to
Natalie. The meeting went
well.
Shawna: I should actually be thanking
you. Natalie called me into
her office this morning to
give me some feedback on
my work.
Corey: How did it go?
Shawna: Pretty well. Natalie praised
me for the extra effort I put
into the marathon we
sponsored. But she’s
disappointed that I haven’t
gotten more people to use
the indoor swimming pool
So I’ve thought of some
great new programs we
could start up.
