Confusing Words‏

The English language has a huge vocabulary of over 600,000 words. That's good for dictionary publishers, but it can be a challenge to language learners. Many words in English have almost the same meaning. Their usage, however, is often very different. Look at the following words and try your hand at using them correctly.

ENCOURAGE and COMFORT
To encourage means to give hope or confidence to someone. You want them not to
give up, but to try again. To comfort someone means to soothe someone's hurt feelings or make them feel better when they are feeling down. You let the person know you understand.
Ex. Teachers encourage their students to get good grades. Tommy comforted his sister when her puppy died.

•When you feel sad, a pet can really _________ you.
鼓勵的意思是給人希望或是信心,你希望他們不要放棄,而能再試一次;而安慰則

ENTER and JOIN
People enter contests and competitions. They want to compete to win a prize.
Join is used when people become a member of a club or organization or participate
in an activity.
Ex. At least 25 people entered the pie-eating contest. Will you join the
baseball team this year?

•Frank hopes to ____________ the math contest next spring.
參加和加入 (enter and join)
人們參加比賽和競賽,他們彼此較勁以獲得獎賞;而當人們成為一個俱樂部或組織的一員,或是加入一個活動的時候,則用加入一詞。
例句:At least 25 people entered the pie-eating contest.
Will you join the baseball team this year?
* Will you ____________ the choir at church?
* Frank hopes to __________ the math contest next spring.

HEAR and LISTEN
These two words also mean almost the same thing. They both mean your ears perceive
a sound near you. But listen means that you pay attention to the sound.
Ex. Roxanna heard the sound of traffic on the street.
Did you listen to the president's speech?
• I always _________ to the radio in the evening.
• She can't ___________ the music. Can you turn it up?
聽到和聆聽 (hear and listen)
這兩個字也是幾乎表示一樣的意思,它們都表示以你的耳朵去察覺附近的聲音,
但是聆聽表示你專注地聽那個聲音。
例句:Roxanna heard the sound of traffic on the street.

CURE and HEAL
Cure means to make someone better when they are sick. Usually medical treatment
is involved. Heal means to become healthy again.
Ex. Tom used to suffer from cancer, but now he's completely cured.

•Do you think this medicine can _________ my cold?
醫治和復原 (cure and heal)
醫治的意思是當人生病的時候使人病情好轉,通常會包括藥物的治療;而治癒則是
再次地恢復健康。
例句:Tom used to suffer from cancer, but now he's completely cured.
Do you think these cuts will heal quickly?
* Her leg was completely __________ in five weeks.
* Do you think this medicine can __________ my cold?
Answers: healed, cure
REALIZE and UNDERSTAND
Realize means to be aware of something that you did not know before. Understand
means to completely know the meaning of something or how it works.
Ex. When she got to work, she realized she'd left her umbrella on the bus.
Maggie finally understands these chemistry problems.
•When did you ____________ you wanted to be an opera singer?
•She ___________ everything she needs to do in order to finish the project.
覺察和瞭解 (realize and understand)
覺察表示你感覺到並明白了原先不知道的事;瞭解則是完全知道某事的意義,或是某事如何運作。
例句:When she got to work, she realized she'd left her umbrella on the bus.
Maggie finally understands these chemistry problems.
* When did you ___________ you wanted to be an opera singer?
* She _____________ everything she needs to do in order to finish the project.
