When Making Appointments‏

Have you ever felt as if your life were just one appointment after another? Meetings, interviews, informal rendezvous—appointments fill our schedules. So if you’re making an appointment with a client, an employer or the love of your life, be sure to express yourself clearly.

Conversation 1
Ernest is a third-year communications major. He needs to stop by his professor’s office to make an appointment.
Ernest: Hello, is Professor Wright in?
Secretary: No. He has a class now.
Ernest: I need to schedule a meeting with him. Is he available this afternoon?
Secretary: Let me look at his calendar. It appears that he’s booked

through Friday morning. How about Friday afternoon? He has a 30-minute slot open at 4:30.
Ernest: I have speech class until 4:30, but I can stop by after that.
Secretary: Sounds good. I’ll pencil you in. Please call some time
Thursday to reconfirm your appointment, though. Visiting the dentist is one of those appointments that some of us love to forget.

Receptionist: Good morning, Dr. Moeller’s office, may I help you?
Eddie: Yeah, um, this is Eddie Hastings. My mom said I need to make an appointment with Dr. Moeller.
Receptionist: OK, Eddie. When was your last appointment?
