The Improtance of People Skills

The Importance of People Skills
Mark White is writer at Walker Publications. He writes articles for several of the Walker magazines.
Monica: Here's your Beekeeper's Monthly article back. I just finished reading it. I'm
afraid it needs work.
Mark: ( looking at the article ) I'll say. You put red ink all over it. Maybe I should just rip
it up and start over again.
Monica: You don't need to do that, Mark. It's not a bad article. It just needs a little
touching up.
Mark: Touching up, huh? Looks more like it needs major surgery!
Monica decides to talk to Harvey about Mark.
Monica: Harvey, I'm a little worried about Mark.
Harvey: Mark? Why?
Monica: Well, he's always been a little hard to deal with. But lately he seems more
angry and unhappy than usual. I just talked to him about one of his articles.
He was quite upset when I told him to make some changes.
Harvey: But articles almost always need revision. Mark should know that.
Monica: He does. The article is just a surface issue. The real problem goes deeper.
Harvey: What do you think Mark's problem is?
Monica: Well, I can only think of one thing. We passed him by for that assistant editor
position, remember?
Harvey: Oh, yes. I remember. We felt he wasn't mature enough to handle it. And to
judge by the way he's reacting, I guess we were right.
Monica: That's true. Unfortunately, he has no idea why we decide as we did. He simply
feels rejected. And hurt.
Harvey: Should we talk to him?
Monica: An explanation would help defuse his anger. It would also give him an
opptunity to correct the weaknesses that are holding him back.
Harvey: You're right. Do you want to do it, or should I?
Monica: Well, he's quite irritated with me at the moment. I think it would be best if you
talk to him first. Let him know that you care not only about the company, but
also about his career.
Harvey: OK. I'll have a chat with him.
( at a place near the office )
Harvey: How's it been going, Mark?
Mark: Not very well, Mr. Walker. Monica's always griping about my work. I feel if I can't
do anything right.
Harvey: Well, she doesn't complain to me. Actually, we both think you're one of our
best writers.
Mark: Really? Then why don't you give me more responsibility -- like that assistant
editor position?
Harvey: We'd like to, Mark. You have excellent verbal skills. But to supervise others
well, you need good people skills, too.
You see, Mark, ability alone just isn't enough. You have to know how to
handle others. You have to be pleasant and reasonable even when things don't
go your way. An angry, critical spirit will hurt you and everyone you work with.
Mark: I guess you're right, Mr. Walker. Thanks for taking the time to talk to me. I think
I've learned something important today.
Harvey: I have, too, Mark. Honest, caring communication isn't easy, but it's the only
way to maintain positive relationships and ge the job done.
